2 years in Hong Kong!

“We’ll be relocating for 1, maybe 2 years to Hong Kong.”

Friends, today marks the day my (Sam’s) visa for an extended stay in Hong Kong was stamped 2 years ago.  We left Melbourne on the 22nd of April 2011 but had a holiday in Thailand before settling into Hong Kong life.  Unfortunately for some (and fortunately for others) we don’t plan to move back to Melbourne soon.  What’s our next plan?  We don’t know – but we know we’re called to stay here for another 4-5 years.  So to those I’ve said I’m on a “career break from engineering”, I think the meaning behind “break” has been redefined from something finite to a sense of permanence.

So let’s reflect on the spiritual growing, celebratingtravelling, exploring and experiencingworking and living in HK during these 2 years:

  • 22-26 April 2011: Took a trip to Bangkok (Thailand)
  • 26 April 2011: Began our journey in Hong Kong!
  • 2 May 2011: Cycled from Tai Wai to Plover Cove and back to Tai Wo (~30kms)
  • 21 May 2011: Attended Terence & Jessica’s Wedding
  • May 2011: Visited a few churches
  • 1 June 2011: Visited Rock (ICA’s 20-29 Young Adults) Home Group
  • 6 June 2011: Hiked from Tung Chung to Tai O (~15kms)
  • 12 June 2011: Settled into ICA, our home church in Hong Kong!
  • 30 June 2011: Sam began taking private tuition classes
  • 1 July 2011: Kayaked in Sai Kung
  • 6 July 2011: Moved to Hung Hom (thanks for letting us borrow a room, Dad & Mum)
  • 9-10 July 2011: Took a trip to Macau
  • 24 July 2011: Sam began serving at GenNext (ICA’s Kids Ministry)
  • 30 July – 6 August 2011: Sam went on a trip to Xian (China) teaching English to local teachers
  • 27 August 2011: Sam joined DramaWorks (ICA’s Drama Ministry)
  • 1 September 2011: Sam’s first day of teaching at Funful Sear Rogers International School
  • 3 September 2011: Joined RenaisNews (ICA’s News Ministry)
  • 12 September 2011: Attended Matt & Kerrie-Anne’s Wedding
  • 29 October – 1 November 2011: Took a trip to Melbourne (Australia), attended Albert & Tiffany’s Wedding
  • 10 December 2011: Saw the Total Lunar Eclipse
  • 19 December 2011: Celebrated our 2 year anniversary at Gaddi’s
  • 20-24 December 2011: Took a trip to Fukuoka (Japan)
  • 31 December 2011: Attended Walker & Trista’s Wedding (Sam was a co-MC)
  • 25-27 January 2012: Took a trip to Dongguan & Foshan (China)
  • 29 January 2012: Sam went to Macau to celebrate Adam’s bucks
  • 11 February 2012: Attended Adam and Betsy’s Wedding (We had the honour of being groomsman and bridesmaid)
  • 3 March 2012: Steph joins DramaWorks
  • 6-8 April 2012: Took a trip to Taipei (Taiwan)
  • April 2012: Steph was awarded the Certified Scrum Master (CSM) designation
  • 5-13 May 2012: Sam went to Melbourne first, attended Peter’s bucks then went to Brisbane (Australia).  Steph joined on the 11th and we attended Peter & Julie’s Wedding on the 12th.  (Sam had the honour of being best man.)
  • 26-27 May 2012: Sam went with the ICA Men’s group to Sha Tin for a conference
  • 22-24 June 2012: Had a Leaders Retreat in Mui Wo
  • 30 June 2012: Moved to Kowloon City (goodbye harbour view!)
  • 14 July 2012: Sam said goodbye as his first class graduated from Primary School.
  • July 2012: Steph was awarded the Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) designation
  • 24 July 2012: Experienced a T10 and had a miniature waterfall in our bedroom
  • 27 July 2012: Steph organised a Karaoke party for Sam’s birthday
  • 11-20 August 2012: Took a trip to Rome & Florence (Italy) and London (UK)
  • 30 September – 2 October 2012: Took a trip to Heyuan, Huizhou & Dongguan (China)
  • 2-4 November 2012: Rock Camp at Mui Wo
  • 11-13 December 2012: Took a trip to Bali (Indonesia) to attend Garry & Lili’s Wedding (we had the honour of being celebrants and MCs)
  • 19 December 2012: Celebrated our 3 year anniversary at Caprice
  • 23-27 December 2012: Took a trip to Tokyo (Japan)
  • January 2013: Steph started a new job
  • 9-13 February 2013: Took a trip to Bangkok (Thailand)
  • 16 March 2013: Attended Albert & Zoe’s Wedding
  • 29 March – 4 April 2013: Went to Bataan (Philippines) for outreach and equipping the youth of a local church
  • 13 April 2013: Began training for the 12 June Dragon Boat Race in Stanley

…so nope, we don’t plan to move back to Melbourne just yet 😉

Being the geek/ex-engineer that I (Sam) am, here are some stats:

  • 111 visitors from overseas to date (yep that’s an average of 2.1 visitors per week!)
  • 155 restaurants in HK added to our SGS Eateries Guide (here they are: COMPLETE VERSION and HK ONLY)
  • 15 trips out of HK (Australia x2, China x3, Europe x1, Indonesia x1, Japan x2, Macau x2, Philippines x1, Taiwan x1, Thailand x2)
  • 8 weddings attended (Terence&Jessica, Matt&Kerrie-Anne, Albert&Tiffany, Walker&Trista, Adam&Betsy, Peter&Julie, Garry&Lili, Albert&Zoe)
  • 4 weddings missed (Jenkin&Elma, Wallace&Sherry, Nigel&Joanne, Robbie&Tara – sorry guys!)
