Tonight we decided to dine at our favourite restaurant, Shira Nui, as a little farewell/send-off. I will be leaving in just under two weeks and I wanted to spend my last few nights eating something great in the great Culinary State. I will definitely miss the food in Melbourne, but more so, I’ll miss Steph… we realise that we won’t be able to organise our monthly anniversary dates. However, the project arrangements include an R&R weekend every 4 weeks – which is fantastic. Unlike the previous times we went to Shira Nui, we didn’t bring our camera (the photos would be the same anyway). However, we took some random photos before hand:
The Last of Good Food, for now.
17 Months!
..and still growing to love each other more. =)
We celebrated our 17 Months a day in advance due to another event happening tomorrow. Furthermore, the restaurant we dined at was rather exclusive and I had to book a couple of months in advance – and only then could we get a Thursday night booking!
Tempura Hajime was highly recommended by a few friends and based on their experiences, we managed to find the restaurant which was well hidden in a street full of high-rise apartments. The menu was a set one, and it was all tempura, freshly deep-fried in the sesame-and-tea oil and placed before us on stereotypically tiny Japanese ceramic dishes. The bar could only seat 12 people at a time and I believe they only have two sessions per night. The exclusiveness added to the romantic evening and the dessert was a great way to cool the deep-fried throat! While the food here was exquisite and artistic, our love (addiction?) for sushi still rings true.
This will be our last “organised” monthly date – as I will be flying to Western Australia to begin my 13-month stint at Boddington Gold Mine. Gonna miss her!!

Dinner with Joy
Steph and I caught up with Joy Leet over dinner this evening. Joy encouraged me from her experiences in seconding to NZ for a year. Some of the interesting things she said:
- Don’t just automatically go into the ministry you’re familiar with, just go where the Holy Spirit leads.
- It’s a very rewarding time and when you come back, you realise you’ve grown and are able to do things you weren’t able to do previously.
- Be a blessing while you’re away.
ANZ Mortages Tech Team Dinner
I had the opportunity to meet Steph’s team over dinner at Giuseppe Arnaldo and Sons at Crown. It was an interesting restaurant – they had no booking system, so you had to wait in the bar (for quite a while if it’s a busy night) and there was preserved meat hanging everywhere! Almost abattoir-like. Their menu, while quite extensive, had a wide selection of offal. I played it safe and went for the steak. Read More…
16 Months!
We didn’t go out this time, but enjoyed some food at home. Steph’s cousin Cecilia also joined us for the evening and we took some weird and interesting photos on Steph’s iMac.

Late Afternoon Stroll
Before having dinner at one of Steph’s uncle’s house, we had a late afternoon stroll at the Lakewood Nature Reserve which was practically behind the house!
One Seed Stall
Being the end of daylight savings, I chose this day to run the One Seed Stall at Camberwell Market, so we could all have an extra hour’s sleep! James and Lee-Mei (JKLM) together with us (SGS) arrived at the marketplace at 5:30am to set up the stall. It costed $48 to hire the spot and $7 to rent the table – and at the end of the day we only made a $1 profit! Craig and Ai Hui came to visit us and said that it was only the first time there was a stall at Camberwell Market so at least we’ve found out what can sell and what price to set. It was good for the four of us to enjoy the vibe of the market, whilst at the same time bracing the cold weather in the morning and the hot sun in the afternoon.
She’s Back! Finally!
My dear, dear Stephberry TongTong finally came back this evening! 3 weeks of house-sitting and “baby-sitting” her two teenage brothers was quite a challenge. Although they mainly kept to themselves playing computer games, I guess I’ve learnt to appreciate how Mum has to spend hours preparing dinner each day – and figuring out what to cook the next day!

I Shall Go!
After more than 2 weeks of praying, seeking advice, and more praying – I’ve made the decision: I am going! But no it wasn’t going to be easy, especially with bringing closure to my responsibilities here – one of the biggest is that I am a leader in church and will need to find people to take over.
Also, while I was originally meant to work in Boddington as an Instrumentation (or Control Systems) Engineer, I will now be working in the Electrical field. I had hoped to get some Inst experience rather than just Electrical alone, but I was reassured that I will get some Inst experience anyway.
In the last 2 weeks I had been sending updates to my friends. This was the latest email: Read More…
Earth Hour 2008
I organised a dinner at Steph’s place. Expecting around 12-15 to show, it turned out that there were 20 people! Among them was my colleague Michael “Benji” Benjamin whom I fetched from the city earlier in the day and helped with the dinner preparations. It took 5 hours to prepare, but it was fun and worth it. Being the night where we celebrated Earth Hour, we had a candlelit dinner from 8pm to 9pm. On the menu were:
- Querzoli Chicken Nuggets
- Stuffed Chicken Bites, with Sun-dried Tomato, Pesto and Mayonnaise Dip
- Japanese Gyoza
- Chicken and Avocado Penne Pasta
- Potato, Lamb and Triple-Cheese Bake
- Italian Salad
- Oreos, Vanilla Ice-Cream and Peach Slice “In-a-Cup”
- Japanese Cheesecake (made from scratch by Sonia!)
